Golfer’s Elbow
Everyone knows that golfer’s elbow can ruin a game of golf. In some cases the pain can be so severe that you may end up abandoning the sport you love altogether. We’re going to investigate what golfer’s elbow is, what causes it and if CBD might be able to help you get back to the sport you love!
What is Golfer’s Elbow?
Golfer’s elbow is another name for medial epicondylitis. It’s a form of tendinitis that affects golfers and it’s actually quite similar to tennis elbow. It is when the muscles and tendons that control your wrists and fingers are damaged by straining or repetitive use.
What are the Symptoms of Golfer’s Elbow?
The most common symptoms are pain and tenderness. You’ll feel this on the inner side of your elbow and sometimes down your inner forearm too. There’ll be stiffness in your elbow and it might hurt when you make a fist. You also might experience weakness in your hands and wrists as well as numbness and tingling in your fingers. These symptoms can come on gradually or all at once and they’re likely to worsen when you’re doing certain movements like swinging a golf club.
What are the Causes of Golfer’s Elbow?
Golfer’s elbow is caused by the action of swinging a golf club, especially if you use a grip where your hands do not overlap. However, you can get golfer’s elbow even if you don’t play golf just from day to day life or another sport. There are certain conditions that put you at a higher risk of getting golfer’s elbow. Namely, being over 40 years old, smoking, obesity and performing a repetitive action for over two hours a day. Using bad technique to lift, throw or it as well as failing to do a warm up or strength training can all lead to golfer’s elbow.
How can you Treat Golfer’s Elbow?
You can try and treat golfer’s elbow in a number of ways. One of the most important things is to rest. Resting gives your elbow time to heal and let the muscles and tendons recover. Ice is a good way to help relieve the pain and applying ice packs three or four times a day for 15 minutes should help recovery. You can also purchase a golfer’s elbow brace which will reduce the strain you put on your tendons and muscles. Some exercises can be good for stretching and strengthening your elbow. A doctor will be able to recommend if this is the right option for you.
You should see a doctor if over the counter painkillers and ice have no effect on your pain. You should also see a medical professional immediately if you can’t bend your elbow, it looks deformed or if it is inflamed and you also have a fever.
Can you Prevent Golfer’s Elbow?
The good news is that there are lots of different ways you can reduce the risk of getting golfer’s elbow.
Firstly, it’s a good idea to strengthen your forearm muscles. You can do this by lifting light weights or even by squeezing a tennis ball. These gentle exercises can help make sure your muscles are primed for action when they’re needed.
Another important thing you should do is to make sure you’re using proper form and the right equipment. If you’ve been playing golf for a while without checking your form it might be a good idea to get a coach or a friend to check your swing is as it should be. In terms of your golf equipment you should think about using graphite clubs which are much lighter than older golfing irons. These can reduce the strain on your arm and reduce the damage to any muscles.
Also, you should make sure you rest at any sign of elbow pain. Resting in between rounds of golf is important, especially if you don’t have particularly strong arms.
Can CBD help with Golfer’s Elbow?
CBD, or cannabidiol, is something that can potentially help with golfer’s elbow. CBD oil has been used to combat inflammation by a number of professional athletes. Phil Mickelson, who recently won the 2021 PGA Championship at the age of 50, uses CBD. He most likely takes CBD to help with the pain from arthritis he experiences as well as to help him focus before an important game. Other golfers like Tiger Woods and Scott McCarron are also big fans of CBD whilst Bubba Watson is sponsored by a CBD brand. CBD is clearly working well for them and there’s no reason it won’t work for you in the same way.
